Cummins 6.7L 24 Valve Turbodiesel Engine

The 6.7L Cummins Engine, otherwise known among Cummins and diesel  enthusiasts as the "6-7," is the successor to the 5.9L 24 Valve Cummins. This engine was used in 3rd and 4th generation Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. boasting 350-400 HP depending on the year and model, this engine not only has the speed, but with up to 1000 lb-ft of torque, it also has the power to set industry standards, and tackle massive tasks. The 6.7 is the first Cummins to ever require "DPF" or Diesel Particulate Fluid, which is used to capture soot from the exhaust through a process called regeneration. This is important to meet emissions standards.
Just like it predecessors, the 6.7 has an entire community of aftermarket parts and support available. This engine continues to be perfected and maintained for the current year Dodge Rams, as it is the latest model engine included in Cummins "B" series engines.
Apart from a larger displacement then the engines before it, The 6.7 has been reconfigured electronically and continues to be made more efficient every year. The Direct Injection system had been changed to a different Common rail system than the 5.9 that is capable of significantly higher pressures. This matched with its larger displacement is what allows the cummins to boast significantly larger numbers in terms of both Horsepower and Torque.

Common Engine Issues and Resolutions

One of the biggest problems with the 6.7 is Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) clogging. Cummins decision to wait until 2007 to introduce the DPF into its line of engines ultimately backfired and resulted in problems they were not prepared for.
The next major problem with the 6.7 is with its Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). The VGT works by using moving parts to change the volume and shape of the inside of the turbo to provide optimal power at any time, however due to the nature of diesel engines, the moving parts that are responsible for varying the geometry tend to get covered in soot and oil, and ultimately seize up causing much greater turbo-lag, and significantly less top-end power.
