The 6.4L PowerStroke Turbodiesel Engine is the successor to the 6.0L PowerStroke. It was the first diesel engine introduced into the diesel trucking industry that utilized dual turbochargers. This was also the First PowerStroke to use the Diesel Particulate Filter system (DPF). Given this technology was still new at the time, the use of the DPF system and the regeneration process greatly hindered this engines power and fuel economy. As this engine was introduced rather quickly after Ford's failure with the 6.0L engine, the resulting swiftness of production caused this engine to develop frequent problems of its own. Although not very sought after, this engine is capable of being a decent engine if the necessary buffing, or "bulletproofing" of this engine is done.
Common Engine Issues:
Pistons Rings: The #7 and #8 piston rings are prone to failure due to the regeneration process. This exposes the piston rings to excessive heat which eventually causes the piston rings to lose tension, causing low to no compression and excessive blow-by.
Rocker Arms: The tips of the rocker arms have a tendency to break off due to the higher pressure of the valve train when the mileage of the engine reaches around 100,000 miles.
Turbocharger: The bearings in the turbocharger are prone to failure due to the high exhaust temperatures of the regeneration process.
EGR: The cooler for the EGR has a tendency to fail which in turn allows coolant to flow back into the #8 cylinder which can cause hydro-locking and also can cause the piston connecting rod to bend, and other various points of damage to engine upon starting the engine.
